“I’m the king with crown, I’m the champ with the belt/ only nigga hotter than me is my mother fucking self” “I just went and I said what was on my chest, I feel I’m the hottest out, I earned that shit”, said Scrooge when asked about “Myself” off his upcoming album “Cool Boy Music”. “I’ve worked on other albums with different themes, but I’ve never quite heard anything like “Cool Boy Music”, I feel like it’s something game doesn’t have”.
His dream all started back in 2003 when Shelby Bonilla went in and record “My turn”. Man I really didn’t know what I was doing scrooge said, who went by “Rain” at the time, but that’s where I started to get a feel for music”. Bruce Aaron had been around for a minute, and inspired Scrooge to take that leap. “I use to always hear Bruce, and a local rapper named C-4 freestyle at lunch, I wanted to apart of the scene. I use to pull Bruce aside and spit two or three punch lines to him and stop, he’ll tell me keep going” Scrooge said. “We use to always kick it, I was writing so I tried to get him to get in the game”, Bruce said. Who would have known that the conversion those two had would turn into the success that it has to today. “I worked hard on a lot singles, albums, and mix tapes but I never really got any of them way I wanted them to, it was never perfect like I wanted it to be”, said Scrooge. A lot of hard work went into his first project, a mix tape called “Mr. Overlooked”. “I felt like I was overlooked, point blank, I was in a couple different groups and I felt like out of all the artist I was the most overlooked one. Sometimes I felt like I was overlooked on my own label. I felt like they didn’t even give me a chance to do my own thing, but keep telling me I’m next to blow. The group projects never really worked out, everybody went they own way, leaving me to do my solo thing” said Scrooge.
Scrooge, who was on Stack G’s at the time, felt like he wanted to be his own man. “I felt like the only to get the respect I thought I deserve was to leave, and do my own thing”. I started MPR records, which stood for Money, Power, and Respect. I started working on Mr. Overlooked in 2005, while preparing to drop an album called “Due For Respect”, the mc said. “I felt like Mr. Overlooked was a good mix tape for me to get in the game. I felt like I rushed it a little bit, but at the same people was telling me it was one of the best mix tapes they had heard, said Scrooge.” Due for Respect, however would get put on hold. Once again Scrooge put his solo career on hold, to do group activates. “I pretty much took Vell under my wing, I need an artist, who had a passion for music like I did. I rapped, and he singed. He could really sing, and he his writing skills were impressive” Scrooge said. MPR later changed to BestOUT Nation. “BestOUT isn’t just a record label, it’s a nation. I got dancers, athletes, rappers, it’s just the BestOUT at that time, and that skill,” said Scrooge about his organization. “Vell was my first artist on BestOUT. It worked great for a while; we killed every track we did. We did shows and people really felt our vibe. We were number one on KZRB 103.5 Top 5 at 5 PM for three weeks straight, and that includes all the major rappers”, said Scrooge speaking on the situation. However, like momma use to tell you, everything that glitters isn’t gold. “The same song that brought us together, and kept us at number 1 on the charts, also broke us up. I just felt like his fame kind of got to him, it was like a different Vell. I’m not much of putting family business out in the streets, but a situation came up and I felt like he handled it completely the wrong way. That was it, I was back to doing me” Scrooge said.
“Knucklehead was for the movement of doing me and helped me get my solo stuff together”, said Scrooge. “Everybody that raps in this area wants a Knucklehead beat, I’m fortune to have known Knuck since he was in diapers, pull-ups actually if we being real. Knucklehead was like a brother to me, I’ll hit him up and ask for a beat, and he sends me tracks and for that I appreciate everything he’s done for me. For those that don’t know he’s actually my family, my cousin” said the mc. For those that don’t know Knucklehead is a very creditable producer who bounces back from Texarkana, TX and Atlanta, GA. He’s done beats for Gucci Man, Trey Songz, Young LA, Slick Pulla, J Money, and a lot of upcoming artist. “Knuck offers a helping hand for me whenever he can. It feels kind of weird to spit on the same beats that these guys speaking on, but I feel like I’m going just as hard as they are on the same beats” said Mr. Overlooked.
“Yea, actually Knucklehead did the first beat for Cool Boy Music” said Scrooge. “I had this session that I had coming up, and I didn’t like any of the beats I was rapping to. They were other people’s beats for a mix tape, and I thought to myself, fuck this it’s time for my album. I hit Knuck up and he sent me two beats, the beats for Gnarly and Party, which are both on my album” he said. “He would just send me cd’s and say pick “lil nigga”, I got the smoothest, coolest track he had and threw a drum pattern on it. That’s how Gnarly showed up” Scrooge said. By Knucklehead sending Scrooge these two beats, he would create monster. “I felt like it was time, It’s my time. I hooked up with this other producer who was a little younger, but I had street buzz, G.I. Man, G.I. sent me this player ass beat, and I hopped all over it” said Scrooge. “It’s a celebration, I’m single, yea I got rid of Mrs. You Know Who” said Scrooge singing his potential second single. “Celebration, it’s a club song with a smooth ass flow, you know Cool Boy Music. You got Rap, R’n’B, Rock, County, and now you got Cool Boy Music, I’m starting my own genre” laughed Scrooge. “I was listing to my Cool Boy Music, and I wanted to make sure everybody was happy. Big Mac, who was another guy who was heavy in the streets, threw me a beat. It was fire ass beat, and I thought to myself It’s about to go down. The hook ended up being, IT GO DOWN!” said Srooge.
“It’s been a long ass year”, said Scrooge. “I’ve record songs and tossed those bitches, I’ve threw a beats. I’m doing my damnist to make this the best I can and it’s there, it’s ready. I don’t want to make a CD that will just sell well in my hood. I want to make a CD that people will say can compete on a major artist. I’m thinking of a larger scale, not just local. Myself, Celebration, and Gnarly are my three singles, I’m rolling with those. I put a lot of hard work into this project, and it’s paying off now. When the album drops, I think the radio play is going to be crazy. It’s all starting to all work out, third-quarter is mine”.
Scrooge’s solo project has taken a lot of his time away from BestOUT. Now that Cool Boy Music is almost complete, he can focus on the BestOUT side of things, and keep everything rolling. “Chase came to me with some good ass ideas, I’m glad to have him in the headquarters department of BestOUT” said Scrooge speaking of Chase Brewster. “Chase and Me been down for a minute, it was only right to keep him in house. He actually use to rap, and was pretty damn good at it. We would probably be pushing his album next if we could catch a beat” laughed Scrooge. “I guess technically he retired, pretty much just said fuck it though. He said man let’s make Band-Aid apart of BestOUT” said Scrooge speaking on the situation. “Band-Aid went hard, I always like his lyrics. He had just moved back down here from Atlanta, GA and was looking for a place to call home. Me and Chase put together a late night conference call with Band-Aid. We basically pitched him the idea, and he loved it” Scrooge said. “Man shawty, I’m happy to be here at BestOUT, this my family man, big shit about to popping, little shit anit stopping” said Band-Aid.
“I’m up first for BestOUT, not because it’s me, that’s just how it happen” said Scrooge. “Cool Boy Music is ready, it’s got to get pressed, and the artwork done. Band-Aids up next, plain and simple. He’s my guy that I want to push; he’s got a lot to say and the world going to feel him. I got faith in him, that’s what it’s all about. He’ll probably do a mix tape first I think, but that’s all on him. He makes his own decisions, and I back him. It’s a family thing. It’s going to be a big year for us”, said Scrooge, “y’all stay tuned.”
